Brazil: X platform blockade comes into effect. “This Saturday, Brazil woke up without X,” notes El País. “When entering the social network, the user discovered the following message: ‘posts cannot be downloaded at this time’,” the newspaper specifies. The blockage follows the decision of a Brazilian Supreme Court judge on Friday to suspend Elon Musk’s platform, for ignoring a series of court decisions related to the fight against disinformation. As a result, “Brazilians have migrated en masse to X’s rivals,” including Bluesky, where “nearly 900,000 accounts” have been created in the last two days, notes Folha de São Paulo. Elon Musk has assured that he will begin publishing on Sunday “the long list of crimes” committed by the magistrate, as well as that of the “Brazilian laws that he violated” with his decision, writes El País.
Protests in Venezuela: Hundreds of inmates transferred to high-security prisons. The Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) denounced on Saturday the transfer of more than 700 inmates, arrested during the recent anti-regime protests, “to high-security prisons,” reports the Efecto Coyuco website. The OVP deplores that these transfers are marred by “numerous irregularities,” stressing that “to date, none of the people transferred […] have been authorized to contact their families” or to request the services of a “trusted lawyer.” Some 2,400 people have been arrested during the protests against the regime of President Nicolás Maduro, who claimed victory in the presidential election on July 28 – a vote that the opposition claims to have won by a large margin. The protests were harshly repressed, leaving 27 dead and 192 injured.
UK: Two dead in separate attacks at Notting Hill Carnival. A 32-year-old mother and a 41-year-old chef, victims of separate attacks during the Notting Hill Carnival, have succumbed to their injuries, police said Saturday. Cher Maximen, who was stabbed on August 25 while “trying to intervene in a fight,” died in hospital on Saturday, the BBC reported. Mussie Imnetu, who worked as a chef in Dubai and was visiting London, died on Friday after being “found unconscious on Monday night” outside a restaurant with a head injury, the British broadcaster added. Two men aged 20 and 31 were arrested this week in connection with the cases. Their attempted murder charges will be reviewed in light of the victims’ deaths. The Notting Hill Carnival – the world’s most popular after Rio de Janeiro in Brazil – attracted more than a million people this year.
