There is the British tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, founder of the multinational IT company Autonomy, among the six missing in the shipwreck of the yacht Bayesian that sank at dawn today 19 August 2024 off the coast of Sicily in the Palermo area. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is instead in the list of survivors.
The 56-meter British-flagged yacht sank near Porticello with 12 passengers and 10 crew on board. Fifteen survivors of the shipwreck, while the chef was found dead at sea
Who is Mike Lynch
The “British Bill Gates” Lynch was at the center of a fraud case for the $11 billion sale of his software company to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
Last June, a San Francisco jury acquitted him of fraud charges. Lynch and former finance executive Chamberlain had allegedly inflated the company’s revenue. The sale of Autonomy was one of the UK’s biggest technology deals: the acquisition was supposed to strengthen the US software house, but instead led to a series of legal battles and proved a disaster, with HP writing down the value of Autonomy by $8.8 billion in a year. Former finance chief Sushovan Hussain served five years in prison on charges related to the HP deal and was released in January.
