European Countries and Canada Warn Citizens About Stricter US Travel Rules

Date:

Several European countries and Canada have warned their citizens about new travel restrictions imposed by the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration. Travelers have been advised that failing to comply with these new rules could lead to detention or deportation.

The White House policy, approved by executive order on January 20, recognizes only two genders. As a result, travelers with a gender-neutral “X” on their passports or those who have changed their gender could face difficulties at US borders.

UK Warns of Possible Arrests

The UK Foreign Office recently updated its travel guidance for the US, warning that strict entry rules are being enforced. “Any failure to follow these rules could result in arrest or detention,” the statement said. This follows reports of a British tourist being detained at the US-Canada border.

Canada Reduces Short-Term Stay Period

Previously, Canadians could stay in the US for up to six months without special permission. However, Ottawa announced on March 21 that this period has been reduced to 30 days. Canadian citizens and other foreign nationals staying beyond 30 days are now required to register with US authorities. Failure to do so could lead to fines, penalties, or even criminal charges.

Denmark and Finland Caution Transgender and Non-Binary Travelers

Denmark’s Foreign Ministry updated its travel advice on March 21, warning transgender and non-binary travelers of potential issues at US entry points. “If your passport lists ‘X’ as your gender or you have changed your gender, it is recommended to contact the US embassy before traveling to confirm the applicable regulations,” the statement advised.

Finland has issued similar guidance, stating that visa applications may be denied if the gender on the passport does not match the traveler’s biological sex.

France Advises Compliance with US Embassy Guidelines

France’s Foreign Ministry updated its guidance on Tuesday, urging travelers to follow advice from the US embassy and check with airlines for any changes in entry requirements. French citizens applying for a US visa or visa waiver are required to disclose their birth-assigned gender under the new regulations.

Germany Urges Compliance with US Immigration Laws

Germany also issued new guidelines after reports that several German citizens were detained at US borders. According to the German Foreign Ministry, travelers can be detained, arrested, or deported for having a criminal record, providing false information about their visit, or overstaying their permitted period.

German travelers with a gender-neutral passport or a gender that does not match their biological sex are advised to contact US authorities in Germany before traveling.

These warnings reflect growing concerns about the impact of Trump’s gender policy and stricter US immigration rules on international travelers.
