Ten EU-funded films and projects have been selected to participate in the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which opens today.
Harvest by Athina Rachel Tsangari is in the running for the prestigious Golden Lion, while four EU-funded films have been selected in the Horizons category: Quiet Life by Alexandros Avranas, Wishing on a Star by Péter Kerekes, Anul nou care n-a fost (The New Year That Never Came) by Bogdan Mureşanu and Pooja, Sir by Deepak Rauniyar.
Five other EU-funded works have been selected for this year’s competition, including in the Venice Immersive category and the Giornate degli autori section. Three more films are included in the “Out of Competition” category.
These works have received a total of over €1.7 million in EU support through the MEDIA strand of the Creative Europe programme and have been co-produced by international groups from several EU countries.
Věra Jourová, the Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency, will be present at this year’s edition. She will meet the Artistic Director of the Cinema Department of the Venice Biennale. Vice-President Jourová will also participate in a roundtable on the social impact of documentaries entitled “Unseen Leaders”, organised by Think-Film and Impact Europe. She will also give the opening speech at the Ukrainian Day event organised by the Venice Production Bridge (for film industry professionals) and attend the premiere of Olha Zhurba’s MEDIA-funded film Pisni zemli, shcho povilno horyt’ (Songs of Slow Burning Earth).
