Defence: Rishi Sunak announces plan to increase spending to 2.5 percent of GDP

From Warsaw, Poland, Rishi Sunak announced that the United Kingdom will increase the defense spending threshold to 2.5 percent by 2030. The British Prime Minister met on Tuesday 23 April with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk, the Secretary NATO general Jens Stoltenberg. On Wednesday he will be in Berlin to see German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“Today I am announcing the largest strengthening of our national defense in a generation. We will increase spending to a new base level of 2.5 percent of GDP by 2030, starting today and increasing steadily each year,” he said. Sunak explained during his visit to Poland.

“Over the next six years we will invest another 75 billion pounds (over 87 billion euros) in our defense”, added the British prime minister.The increase in military spending by NATO countries
The increase in spending from 2.3 to 2.5 per cent will see the UK become one of the 32 biggest defense spending NATO countries in the alliance after the US.

War support for Ukraine

Sunak also announced a large military aid package to Ukraine amounting to 579 million euros. The United Kingdom will send 400 vehicles: 160 Husky vehicles, 162 armored vehicles and 78 off-road vehicles, 60 boats, 1,600 attack and air defense missiles, as well as new long-range Storm Shadow missiles, and four million rounds of small arms ammunition.
