Calian UK is strengthening its role in British Army training after its acquisition of UK defence training specialist Mabway brought a major Ministry of Defence contract into the Canadian company’s portfolio. The contract, known as Project Numidian, was awarded to Mabway by the Ministry of Defence in June 2023 and provides specialist support for the design, planning and delivery of Army exercises. The agreement has a core three-year term, with two additional one-year options, and is valued at £73.98 million excluding VAT under the published contract award notice.
The development gives Calian an established platform in the UK military training market at a time when armed forces across Europe are placing greater emphasis on readiness, realistic exercises and preparation for complex operating environments. Calian completed its acquisition of Mabway in May 2024, bringing the company’s British Army training activities into its wider defence and learning business.
Why Is Calian UK’s British Army Training Contract Significant?
The significance of the arrangement lies in the breadth of training support covered by Project Numidian. Rather than simply supplying classroom instruction, the programme is designed to help the Army create realistic and demanding training environments in which personnel can practise responding to contemporary and hybrid threats.
The Ministry of Defence procurement notice says the contract covers Contemporary Operating Environmental Force, Opposition Force, high-fidelity casualty simulation, exercise control, operational staff work, scenario writing and senior mentoring. It is intended to support training across different levels and environments.
The procurement was formally concluded on 20 June 2023, with Mabway named as the successful contractor. Two tenders were received during the competition. The published contract value was £73,980,407.59 excluding VAT, while the agreement included two 12-month extension options.
For Calian, the contract is therefore not a newly awarded agreement in 2026. Instead, its significance stems from the company’s acquisition of the business that already held the British Army contract.
How Did Mabway Become Part of Calian’s British Army Training Business?
Calian completed its acquisition of Mabway on 10 May 2024 for up to C$41 million, equivalent to about £24 million at the time of the announcement. The transaction included C$32.4 million, or roughly £19 million, payable at closing.
Mabway had already established a substantial relationship with the British Army before the acquisition. Calian said the company had been a prime supplier to the British Army since 2012 and had several UK offices, with a workforce of more than 1,000 ex-military and civilian permanent staff and contractors across its operations.
The acquisition consequently gave Calian more than a conventional commercial foothold in Britain. It brought established defence relationships, personnel, operational experience and specialist expertise in live military training and simulation.
Calian subsequently incorporated those capabilities into its UK defence offering. The company describes its British operations as providing live exercise support, exercise design, development and delivery, computer-assisted exercise support and maritime training.
What Does Project Numidian Provide to the British Army?
Project Numidian is designed to make military exercises more realistic by introducing simulated operational pressures and adversaries. The Ministry of Defence procurement documents specifically identify actors, information manoeuvre, pyrotechnics, unmanned air systems, data fusion and analysis, exercise-control functions and support to land special operations among the required services.
The role-player element is particularly important because soldiers must often train for circumstances that cannot be recreated solely through conventional battlefield exercises. Civilian actors and specialist personnel can represent populations, organisations, adversaries and other groups that military units may encounter during operations.
Calian says its UK teams provide contemporary operating environmental forces, opposition forces, casualty simulation, exercise control, scenario writing and mentoring under Project Numidian. These services are intended to expose training audiences to challenging contemporary threats and improve operational readiness.
The company’s 2026 defence portfolio states that it supports British Army exercises through role players, subject-matter experts, scenario developers and exercise-control personnel. It says more than 1,000 personnel are employed across the UK for these activities.
How Does Realistic Simulation Affect Military Readiness?
Realistic simulation allows military personnel to rehearse decision-making under conditions that more closely resemble operational environments. Training can incorporate uncertainty, civilian interaction, information disruption, casualties and opposing forces rather than concentrating exclusively on technical battlefield tasks.
This approach is particularly relevant as militaries prepare for conflicts involving multiple domains, including land, cyber, information and electronic warfare. The original Project Numidian requirement specifically envisaged greater integration of intelligence analysis, exercise design, planning and assurance so that training audiences would face contemporary threats at different levels of command.
Calian’s own description of its UK training model similarly emphasises complex and evolving scenarios. Its exercise teams include former commanders and staff officers alongside technical specialists who contribute to planning, scenario development, exercise management and after-action reviews.
The practical objective is to make training more demanding before personnel are required to perform in real operations. For commanders, this can also provide opportunities to assess how headquarters and units respond when plans are disrupted or when several competing problems emerge simultaneously.
What Does Calian Say About Its Expanding Defence Role?
Calian has presented the Mabway acquisition as an important part of its expansion in the UK and European defence markets. The company said the transaction would complement its existing military training and simulation capabilities and create opportunities to provide a broader range of services to defence customers.
Calian has also highlighted the changing requirements facing NATO militaries. The company says its defence business has supported NATO training for 15 years and delivered more than 75 large-scale exercises, including high-intensity, counterinsurgency and peace-support scenarios.
That experience is relevant to the British Army because UK forces frequently train alongside NATO allies and other partners. Training programmes increasingly need to accommodate multinational headquarters, interoperable communications, different doctrines and complex operational environments.
What Happens Next For Calian And British Army Training?
The immediate focus will be continued delivery of Project Numidian during its contracted period. The core three-year arrangement runs through October 2026, while the procurement provides two potential one-year extensions. Contract documentation identifies the core period as running from 8 October 2023 to 7 October 2026, followed by potential option years beginning in October 2026.
That timetable makes the future of the programme particularly relevant as the British Army considers how its training requirements will evolve. The original procurement documentation described Project Numidian as an interim capability intended to bridge towards the Army’s future collective training arrangements.
For Calian, the outcome could influence how deeply it becomes embedded in the UK’s wider defence training ecosystem. The company already provides exercise support and simulation services in Britain, while its wider defence portfolio spans training, readiness, technology and NATO support.
The broader lesson is that military readiness increasingly depends not only on equipment and personnel numbers but also on the quality and realism of training. As the British Army adapts to more complex security challenges, companies capable of delivering large-scale, flexible and realistic exercises are likely to remain important partners. Calian’s position following the Mabway acquisition will therefore be worth monitoring, particularly as Project Numidian approaches its core contract end date and decisions are made on future training arrangements.
