Central Europe Heatwave Breaks Records as Temperatures Surge Above 42°C

Central Europe is facing another spell of exceptional heat, with temperatures exceeding 42°C in parts of Slovakia as the latest heatwave continues to put pressure on energy systems, waterways, transport and agriculture. Slovakia recorded 42.2°C at Dolné Plachtince on Thursday, while Austria registered a national record of 41.2°C at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Hungary is also experiencing extreme heat and unusually warm nights, while falling water levels on the Danube and Rhine are creating additional economic and infrastructure concerns.

Why are temperatures reaching record levels across Central Europe?

The current Central Europe heatwave is being driven by a persistent area of high pressure that has become established over the continent. Such a pattern can trap hot air over a region for several days, allowing temperatures to rise progressively as clear skies and strong sunshine persist.

Meteorological analysis indicates that a broad upper-level ridge has expanded eastwards from Central Europe towards the Balkans. The associated heat dome has helped push daytime temperatures above 40°C across parts of Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and neighbouring countries. Forecasts published earlier in the week indicated that temperatures of 40°C to 43°C could develop across parts of the Pannonian Basin and northern Balkans.

The persistence of the pattern is particularly significant. Extreme heat becomes more hazardous when high daytime temperatures are accompanied by limited overnight cooling, because the human body has less opportunity to recover.

Which countries have recorded the highest temperatures?

Slovakia has recorded one of the most notable readings during the latest phase of the heatwave. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute reported 42.2°C at Dolné Plachtince on Thursday, a level that underlines the intensity of the conditions across southern parts of the country.

Austria has also broken its national temperature record during the current episode. GeoSphere Austria reported 41.2°C at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg near the Slovak border on Wednesday. The reading followed 41.0°C recorded in Vienna a day earlier.

Hungary has experienced similarly severe conditions. Budapest recorded a new overnight temperature record on Wednesday, with temperatures falling only to 28°C. Such high minimum temperatures are particularly concerning because they provide little relief from daytime heat.

The heat has also extended beyond Central Europe. Italy placed all 27 of its major cities under the highest heat alert on Thursday, with authorities advising people to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

How are rivers and energy systems being affected?

The heatwave is coinciding with severe water shortages in several major European river systems. The Danube, one of Europe’s most important waterways, has fallen to exceptionally low levels, creating problems for both transport and electricity generation.

Slovakia’s only nuclear power plant has been operating at around 80% of capacity as water levels in the Danube fall. Hungary’s sole nuclear power plant has faced an even greater reduction in output, with the facility operating at about 10% of capacity according to reports. The plant normally supplies roughly half of Hungary’s electricity, making the disruption particularly significant for the country’s power system.

Slovenia’s Krško nuclear power station has also begun reducing output because of exceptionally high temperatures and low flows in the Sava River. The plant initially planned to reduce generation to 80% of capacity.

These developments demonstrate how extreme heat can create secondary risks. High temperatures increase demand for electricity, particularly for cooling, at the same time as low river levels can restrict the water available for cooling power stations.

What impact is the heatwave having on transport?

Low water levels are also affecting freight movements along major European rivers.

In Germany, drought conditions have reduced water levels on the Rhine, one of the continent’s most important commercial waterways. Some cargo services have reportedly stopped, while vessels that continue operating are carrying smaller loads. The river is heavily used to transport commodities including grains, ores and petroleum products.

The situation creates a wider supply-chain problem. When ships cannot carry their normal cargo volumes, companies may have to move goods by road or rail. That can increase transport costs, create additional pressure on alternative networks and potentially contribute to higher prices.

Similar concerns are emerging along the Danube, where exceptionally low water levels are affecting river navigation and adding to the pressure created by drought.

What are the health risks from the prolonged heat?

The health consequences of the Central Europe heatwave are becoming an increasingly important concern as extreme temperatures persist.

High temperatures can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, with older people, children and individuals with underlying health vulnerabilities among those at greater risk. Outdoor workers, including construction workers and agricultural labourers, can also face prolonged exposure during the hottest part of the day.

The absence of cooler nights can make conditions more dangerous. Meteorological analysis indicates that overnight temperatures in parts of Central and Eastern Europe have remained in the low-to-mid 20s, while Budapest recorded a minimum of 28°C during the latest spell.

Authorities have responded with heat warnings and advice aimed at reducing exposure. In Italy, for example, people in affected cities were advised to avoid direct sunlight between 11am and 6pm. At least four people were believed to have died in recent days amid the extreme heat, including a 19-year-old tomato picker, according to reporting cited by Al Jazeera.

How is drought affecting agriculture and the wider economy?

The combination of extreme heat and prolonged dryness is placing additional pressure on agriculture across Central and Southern Europe.

High temperatures increase evaporation and accelerate the loss of soil moisture, while a lack of rainfall leaves crops increasingly dependent on limited water supplies. The same conditions can raise the risk of wildfires, particularly where vegetation has become dry.

The economic consequences extend beyond farms. Lower river levels can interfere with industrial production, electricity generation and freight transport, while extreme temperatures can reduce labour productivity and increase demand for cooling.

Reports from Hungary, Germany and other affected countries illustrate how the effects of the heatwave are no longer confined to weather-sensitive sectors. Energy, manufacturing, logistics and public services can all be affected when high temperatures persist alongside drought.

Is the Central Europe heatwave linked to wider climate trends?

Scientists have warned that extreme summer heat is becoming a more serious feature of Europe’s changing climate. Europe is warming faster than any other continent, according to reporting citing climate scientists, and repeated heatwaves are raising concerns about whether existing infrastructure is adequately prepared for increasingly severe conditions.

The latest event follows an already exceptionally warm year. Copernicus data showed that June 2026 was the warmest June on record for western Europe, with the regional average temperature 3.06°C above the 1991–2020 average. Temperatures were also much above average across virtually all of western and central Europe during the month.

That does not mean every individual heatwave can be attributed solely to climate change. Weather patterns, atmospheric circulation and high-pressure systems remain important factors in determining when and where extreme heat develops. However, a warmer baseline climate increases the likelihood that naturally occurring heat events will reach more extreme temperatures.

What could happen next as the heatwave moves east?

The heat dome is expected to shift further east and south-east as the weather pattern evolves. Forecast analysis indicates that very high temperatures could continue across Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and parts of Ukraine, with temperatures potentially reaching or exceeding 40°C in some areas.

At the same time, parts of Western Europe could experience some temporary relief as Atlantic air moves into the region. However, longer-range forecasts suggest that another area of high pressure could develop across south-western, western and central Europe next week, although the exact location and intensity remain uncertain.

The immediate focus will therefore remain on heat-health warnings, electricity supply, river levels and wildfire conditions. Authorities and businesses will also be watching whether falling water levels create further restrictions on freight and power generation.

The continuing Central Europe heatwave highlights how extreme temperatures can affect several interconnected systems simultaneously. Record heat is not only a public-health issue; it can disrupt electricity production, river transport, agriculture and industrial activity. With temperatures still elevated and drought conditions persisting, developments in river levels, energy output and weather forecasts will be crucial in determining how severe the wider economic and social impact becomes.
