Starting April 9, 2025, French citizens and other European Union (EU) nationals will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the United Kingdom. UK and Irish citizens, along with holders of valid UK visas, will be exempt from this requirement.
The ETA will allow multiple visits over a two-year period, with a maximum stay of six months per visit. Initially priced at £10 (€12), the fee will increase to £16 (€20) from April 9. Travelers must apply online, and the processing time is expected to take around three business days.
Martin Nolan, a travel expert at Skyscanner, advised travelers to plan ahead. “We understand that new travel requirements like the UK ETA can seem overwhelming at first. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the rules. We recommend applying for the ETA as soon as your travel dates are set, considering the three-day processing time. The good news is that for €12 (about the cost of a coffee and pastry at the airport), you’ll be ready to visit the UK for two years,” he explained.
Additionally, a passport will become the only accepted identification document for entry into the UK, except for residents with “Settled Status” or “Pre-Settled Status.” A temporary exemption will apply to schoolchildren under 18 traveling as part of a school group.
These new rules will apply to all European visitors, including children, traveling for tourism, short business trips, or brief study programs. Travelers are advised to plan ahead and ensure compliance with these updated entry requirements to avoid travel disruptions.
