Prince Harry Steps Down from Sentebale Amid Leadership Conflict

Date:

Prince Harry has announced his resignation from Sentebale, the charity he co-founded in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to support young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. The decision comes in solidarity with the charity’s board of directors, who also resigned following a conflict with the organization’s president.

Sentebale was a deeply personal project for Prince Harry, created in memory of his mother, Princess Diana. For 19 years, the charity has provided critical support to vulnerable youth. However, tensions emerged after the board requested the resignation of Sentebale’s president, Dr. Sophie Chandauka, who took legal action in response.

In a joint statement, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso expressed their sadness over the situation. “It is with a heavy heart that we have resigned as patrons of Sentebale, in support of the board, which was forced to step down,” the statement read.

Dr. Chandauka, a Zimbabwean doctor, refused to step down, citing allegations of harassment, mismanagement, and intimidation. She accused some individuals of abusing their power and using the media to manipulate the situation. “I am an African woman who benefited from a world-class education and career. I will not be intimidated into silence,” she stated.

The Charity Commission, which regulates charities in England and Wales, confirmed that it is reviewing concerns about Sentebale’s governance.

Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso described the situation as “devastating,” acknowledging that the relationship between the board and the president had broken down irreparably. They remain committed to Sentebale’s mission and expressed hope that the charity will continue to thrive.

Sentebale confirmed that it had not yet received formal resignations but announced plans for restructuring to expand its work on youth health and climate issues across Southern Africa.

Prince Harry’s departure from Sentebale marks the end of a significant chapter in his philanthropic work. Founded during his gap year at age 20, Sentebale became a key part of his public life. Despite stepping down from royal duties and losing most of his charitable patronages, Prince Harry remains active with WellChild, a UK charity supporting children with serious health conditions.
