Claude Malhuret’s Speech on Trump and Ukraine Gains Attention in the U.S.

Date:

Claude Malhuret, the former president of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Secretary of State for Human Rights in the Chirac government (1986), has made an unexpected return to the spotlight. Despite serving as a deputy and senator for the past 10 years (Les Indépendants – République et Territoires), Malhuret’s influence had been largely limited to France. However, his speech in the French Senate on March 4th, where he addressed support for Ukraine and criticized Donald Trump, has now drawn international attention.

In his speech, Malhuret referred to Trump as an “incendiary emperor” and criticized the American administration’s handling of global affairs. While the speech did not make headlines on major American networks, it quickly gained traction on social media and among left-leaning media outlets in the United States.

The Atlantic, a highly regarded centrist magazine in the U.S., published a full transcript of Malhuret’s remarks translated into English. Additionally, the American edition of the Huffington Post featured a video of the speech with the headline: “Stop Everything and Watch This French Senator’s Take on America.”

Malhuret’s pointed criticism resonated with the American opposition, particularly with Democratic voters who have struggled to find a clear voice since Trump’s election. The Democratic Party, despite holding the presidency under Joe Biden, has lacked strong leadership. Kamala Harris and Barack Obama have remained largely silent, while recent Democratic communications have relied more on humor and social media trends rather than substance.

Malhuret’s speech stood out for its clarity and directness, offering a rare moment of sharp critique of Trump’s influence on American politics. His words struck a chord with disillusioned Democratic voters, especially those who supported Kamala Harris.

Interestingly, while the speech gained momentum among opposition media, pro-Trump outlets like Fox News have largely ignored it. The Trump administration has also remained silent, offering no official response to Malhuret’s remarks.

This moment marks a rare instance of a French political figure shaping the American political conversation. Malhuret’s eloquence and sharp critique have positioned him as a significant voice on the international stage, with his words highlighting the broader challenges facing American democracy.
