The importance for Europe to invest more in artificial intelligence to bridge the gap with China and the United States was underlined by French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke today – together with his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic – at a Scientific Forum on AI in Novi Sad, on the second and final day of his visit to Serbia. “We have many possibilities and artificial intelligence is transforming our daily lives, but we Europeans look at all this from a distance, while the Chinese and Americans invest much more,” said Macron. “We Europeans – he added – have an important role, we have all the capabilities and possibilities for this, and we can propose our own model.” For Macron, the Chinese model of artificial intelligence is totally guided by the government, which defines rules, norms and standards, while the American one is developed entirely by private companies.
“I limit myself to observing and describing without any condemnation,” the president said, according to whom an innovation model that unites the private and public sectors is desirable, to ensure that artificial intelligence is at the service of the collective interest.
Europe therefore, he said, must not delay further, but must innovate much more to reach the levels of China and the USA. And for this reason, precise and clear rules must be defined, based on science, and not on someone’s personal interests, on common international standards, and on decisions taken by Europe, and not by the Chinese or Americans.
“We believe in artificial intelligence, but we believe that rules and standards must be defined,” said Macron, who praised Serbia’s commitment to the development of high technologies and artificial intelligence. Next February, he said, France will organize a summit on artificial intelligence in Paris with the participation of students, entrepreneurs and researchers.
Today’s Forum in Novi Sad, entitled ‘Let’s Innovate Together in Europe’, took place at the headquarters of the company ‘InGrid Schneider Electric LLC’, in the presence of numerous Serbian ministers, experts and students. From Novi Sad – where he had previously visited the Matica srpska museum with Vucic – Macron returned to Belgrade, from where in the early afternoon he will leave for Paris where the complex internal political crisis and the repercussions of the Telegram affair await him.
