France: Macron says no to left-wing government, Mélenchon: “Situation of exceptional gravity”

Date:

In a press release from the presidency, the possibility of a government formed by the electoral alliance of French left-wing parties is ruled out

A government under the New Popular Front? No, thank you.

After consultations with representatives of the parties and parliamentary groups, the statement from the Elysée did not fail to provoke reactions. In a press release, the possibility of a government formed by the electoral alliance of French left-wing parties, which came first in the second round of the legislative elections, is ruled out.

“A government based solely on the program and parties proposed by the alliance with the largest number of deputies, the New Popular Front, would be immediately censured by all the other groups represented in the National Assembly – the document states – the institutional stability of our country therefore requires not pursuing this option”.

Without delay, several leaders of the left-wing coalition took the floor to denounce a “situation of exceptional gravity. And the popular and political response must be rapid and firm.” This was stated by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, the country’s main left-wing political group. Marine Tondelier, secretary general of the Ecologists, spoke of “a disgrace and dangerous democratic irresponsibility.”

New consultations to begin on Tuesday

In its press release, the Elysée also announced that “a new round of consultations will resume on Tuesday with party leaders and personalities who have distinguished themselves through their experience in the service of the State and the Republic.”

Emmanuel Macron “invites all political leaders to rise to the occasion by demonstrating a spirit of responsibility” and urges in particular the Socialists, Communists and Ecologists to “cooperate with the other political forces.”

“The impeachment motion will be presented”

In a statement, La France Insoumise announced that “the impeachment motion (of Emmanuel Macron) will be presented by the party’s deputies to the bureau of the National Assembly” and that “any proposal by a prime minister other than Lucie Castets will be the subject of a motion of censure”.

A call for popular mobilization

“The gravity of the moment requires a firm response from French society against the incredible abuse of autocratic power of which it is the victim”, continued La France Insoumise in a statement. Following the example of the communist Fabien Roussel, the Insoumis are calling for “marches for respect for democracy”, following Emmanuel Macron’s decision to rule out the possibility of a New Popular Front government.
