COLD CASE – Woman to appear in court next week twenty-six years after baby discovered in forest

March 1998. The United Kingdom is shocked by the discovery of the lifeless body of a newborn baby in a garbage bag found in a forest in Warrington. The so-called “baby Callum” case has so far remained unanswered but Le Parisien tells us that a woman, Joanne Sharkley, originally from Liverpool, has been arrested and is accused of murdering the baby.

“This is an extremely emotional case that has attracted a lot of attention over the past twenty-six years, but I ask people not to speculate,” asked Hannah Friend of the local police. “Criminal proceedings are now active against Joanne Sharkey and she is entitled to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there are no reports, comments or sharing of information online that could in any way undermine these proceedings,” she added.

The baby still unknown

Joanne Sharkey was arrested with a man in July 2023. Both were released, but she was on bail only. She was rearrested and is due to appear in a magistrates’ court on Tuesday.

“Baby Callum” is a nickname given by investigators at the time, because the identity of the baby is still unknown.
