Israeli Soldiers Fatally Shoot Hamas Activist in West Bank

Date:

A Palestinian activist and member of Hamas was killed Friday evening during a clash with Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank, according to consistent sources.

“Mouhammad Jibril Roummaneh died from serious injuries caused by bullets from the occupying forces in El-Bireh”, the twin city of Ramallah, writes the Palestinian Ministry of Health in a statement reporting a second Palestinian injured but providing no details on the circumstances of the incident.

Hamas published a statement presenting Roummaneh as one of its members who had become a “heroic martyr” while “defending the freedom of (his) people” near the Psagot settlement. The obituary press release is accompanied by a photo of a very young man.

“Assailants threw Molotov cocktails at a military post near the (Jewish settlement) of Psagot,” neighboring El-Bireh, the Israeli army said.

“Soldiers (…) identified the suspects and responded with live fire,” the statement added. “Two attackers were neutralized and transferred for treatment,” the text continues.

Questioned by AFP, an army spokesperson did not wish to confirm that one of the two had died as announced by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.

At least 242 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, a Ukrainian and an Italian have been killed since the start of the year in violence linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to an AFP count established from official Israeli and Palestinian sources.

These statistics include, on the Palestinian side, combatants and civilians including minors, and on the Israeli side, the majority of civilians including minors, and three members of the Arab minority.
